Homework
Homework is a valuable extension of classroom learning. It gives students dedicated time to deepen understanding, strengthen recall, and embed key knowledge. Independent study also develops important habits and skills that support lifelong learning, including self-discipline, organisation, and personal accountability.
The Academy’s homework curriculum is directly aligned with our teaching curriculum. Each task is designed to reinforce key vocabulary, knowledge and concepts. Regular independent study supports pre-learning, consolidation, revision and the application of classroom learning, helping students make sustained progress over time. The knowledge-based work students complete outside of lessons provides a strong foundation for increasingly complex understanding and application to be developed with the support of their subject teachers in lessons.
We aim to develop intrinsic motivation by teaching the purpose and value of homework during form time and by making explicit links between homework and classroom learning. Homework is checked for both completion and understanding to ensure accountability, clarify its purpose and provide feedback that drives further progress.
Students receive 20 - 30 minutes of homework per subject for every double lesson each week. Homework is set during the same lesson each week and is due in that same lesson the following week, giving students a predictable routine and helping with planning and organisation.
All tasks are explained in lessons and posted on ShowMyHomework so students can revisit instructions and parents/guardians can stay informed. When your child joins the Academy, you and your child will receive login details so you can create an account, view assigned tasks and support completion.
The Academy has signed up to this online service which allows staff, students and parents to track and monitor homework issued in each subject area.
All teachers record the homework given to every student on the site, the submission date and results. You will be able read through the homework tasks, provide help and support and make sure that your son/daughter completes the homework tasks they are given. You will also be able to check the quality and quantity of homework given by your son/daughter’s teachers.
To access your son/daughter’s homework calendar for the first time, please follow the following steps:
- Go to show my homework link on our website and click “Login” in the top right hand corner.
- For students please enter the PIN you have been given into the PIN section. (Please contact your son/daughter’s Head of Year if you need these details again).
- You will then need to set a password. Set it to something you’ll remember and keep it a secret!
- For parent/carers please enter the PIN you have been given into the PIN section. (Please contact your son/daughter’s Head of Year if you need these details again)
You will need to enter your email address/confirm the email address we hold is correct, you will also need to set a password.
We'll be launching Show My Homework through assemblies and form periods to students. We hope that this service will provide parents/carers with a deeper insight into the homework your son/daughter receives. More importantly, we hope that it will improve your son/daughter’s organisation, time-management, and help them to keep on top of their workload.
