Course Content

Year 10:

Overview of content - Paper 1

  • Study selections from a range of prose fiction.
  • Develop skills to analyse and evaluate 19th-century fiction extracts.
  • Develop imaginative writing skills to engage the reader.

Overview of content - Paper 2

  • Study a range of 20th- and 21st-century non-fiction texts (including literary non-fiction).
  • Develop skills to analyse, evaluate and compare non-fiction extracts.
  • Develop transactional writing skills for a variety of forms, purposes and audiences.

Use spelling, punctuation and grammar accurately

Spoken Language Endorsement – developing spoken language skills

Year 11:

Revision of content and skills for both Language papers, focus on imaginative writing and transactional writing skills.


Assessment

English Language exams:

Component 1: Fiction and Imaginative Writing (40% of total GCSE)

Component 2: Non-fiction and Transactional Writing (60% of total GCSE) NEA: Spoken Language Endorsement

Course Content

Year 10:

Study of three key texts:

  • Shakespeare play – Macbeth,
  • A 19th Century novel – Jekyll and Hyde or Frankenstein
  • A post-1914 British play or novel – Options are Lord of the Flies (William Golding), An Inspector Calls (J.B Priestley) or The Empress (Tanika Gupta)

Develop skills to analyse how the language, form, structure and context of texts can create meanings and effects and develop skills to maintain a critical style and informed personal response.

Year 11:

Study of a poetry collection from the Pearson Poetry Anthology

  • Revision of the key texts from Year 10 and skills used to analyse how language, form, structure and context of texts can create meaning and effects.
  • Develop comparison skills for poetry specifically

Assessment

English Literature exams:

Component 1: Shakespeare and Post-1914 Literature (50% of total GCSE)

Component 2: 19th Century Novel and Poetry since 1789 (50% of total GCSE)
